In-Law Suites in San Mateo
In-law suites are also known as mother and daughter suites or mother-in-law suites. Spaces Home Remodeling can convert a room in your home or existing garage to a suite that is customized to the needs of your loved ones or we can build a brand new structure if space allows.
We handle everything from design to permits to construction. From start to finish you can rest assured that we will build and create the additional living space you need.
Our team has years of experience in the Bay Area designing and building functional and beautiful in-law suites. We strive to offer everyone the comfort (and privacy) they deserve.
In-Law Suite Conversions
Converting existing space in your home is a wonderful way to add an in-law suite. When you decide it is time for another family member to move in, our remodeling team will meet with you to go over your needs and vision. We will work to reimagine your space while keeping your budget, style, and wish list in mind.
There are multiple options to choose from when adding an in-law suite. We can convert a garage, a basement, or an extra bedroom into the living space that your loved one needs.
We also work with the local municipality to ensure proper permits are obtained, if needed, and the project is in compliance with applicable building codes and laws.

In-Law Suite Additions
One of the most popular in-law suite additions is creating a second floor over an existing garage. This allows a studio-like apartment feel for complete independence because we can also include a kitchenette and bathroom.
However, we can build a stand alone structure if your property and local zoning laws allow it.
The choices to customize and add additional living space are endless. Our remodeling team of designers, architects, and builders will work with you to determine the best plan of action to accommodate your specific needs.
Spaces Home Remodeling has years of experience creating beautiful and functional in-law suites for homeowners. You can rest assured that your project is in good, capable hands and that the additional space we create will serve you well for years to come.

What is included in our in-law suite estimates?
Our bid includes a detailed description of the scope of work that is involved in your in-law suite project.
The total cost stated in the bid is for design services, architectural plans (if required and agreed upon), in addition to labor and rough materials.
Finish materials are not included in the bid as we want to give our customers the freedom to control costs and choose the type and style of the materials to their liking.
How long does an in-law suite build take?
The construction work involved in an in-law suite can take anywhere from one to several weeks depending on the scope of work involved.
If a permit was obtained as part of the project, scheduling inspections with a city/county inspector throughout the project, will be required.
The city/county inspection schedule availability can affect the overall timeline.
Does an in-law suite require a permit?
If the scope of work involved in your project includes one or more of the following obtaining a permit will be required:
* Electrical work
* Plumbing work (if needed)
* Changes to the layout of any existing garage.
City/County permit fees will range between $800-$1700. The city/county determines the fees according to the size and cost of the project.
You do not need to worry about obtaining permits, submitting plans, scheduling inspections or filling in any type of paperwork required by the city or county, as it is part of our service and will be taken care of by our office team.
How soon can we start working on your project?
Our in-law suite team can usually start the construction work 1-2 weeks from the day the work contract is signed.
In case a permit is required, work will begin 1-2 weeks from the day the permit is obtained and approved by the city/county
What permits will I need for an in-law suite in San Mateo?
This depends on the type of addition, but in general you will require a building permit (structural BLD), HVAC and Plumbing permits. However if you are in a semi-detached then you will require signoff from the neighbor in the form of a party wall agreement.
Can I live at the property during the remodeling work?
Yes. Staying at home during an in-law suite project is very common and most of our customers do so. In addition, we do everything possible to make you and your family feel comfortable during the process.
How do we communicate with our customers during the in-law suite project process?
During the renovation process your project manager, the home remodeling team and builders who are involved in the remodel, will be 100% available to you.
After signing the work contract, your project manager will open a group messaging system which includes you, our office and any team members related to your project. You can use this platform to ask questions and request updates. In addition, your project manager will visit the property on a daily basis.
Our home remodeling team will arrive at the property every morning Monday- Friday (if that fits your schedule), in order to meet the project deadline.
Our main goal is for you to be happy with our work and your new home.
Can you also create the design for the in-law suite?
Yes. We are a full service Design-Build contractor, meaning we take you from concept to completion including architectural design, interior design, structural engineering, building permit acquisition, and of course, construction.
Will an in-law suite addition add value to my home?
The ROI for in-law suite additions is quite high when compared to most other renovations because you are adding actual square footage to the home. Depending on the type of addition you build, some actually create an ROI higher than the investment itself. Design plays a big factor in this and should never be overlooked!
